As a born & bred Singaporean foodie and a cook trained by my peranakan aunties, I can say I know what and where to eat back home. PS, I am a biased east-ty.
Most local dishes will cost around 3.5 - 7 SGD (if you’re lucky you can still find it for 2.5 🙈)/ Food will be more expensive in the tourist areas and not always the best. The best meals can usually be found in hdb neighbourhoods at hawker shops (small individual shops that only serve 1-3 dishes).
I don't usually recommend eating in restaurants if you have limited time or funds as they are more expensive and usually not authentic.
Here's a list of everything I try to eat when I go home (Take notes that most of these dishes can be found almost anywhere, but these are my recommended spots. Once you get to the hawker centers, just ask around and the locals will point you to their favourite stalls.):
Let's start with the 2 local classics (Our national dishes).
Singapore Chili Crab🌶 (Our main dish) this one can be expensive. Usually they charge per kilo. ******************************* Jumbo Seafood was always good (they have several locations), I havn't gone in a while but back in the day they were the most consistent. You should order fried mantou with it. *******************************
Hainanese chicken rice (our most popular dish, extremely cheap 😂) pretty much any hawker center will have it.
